What is an EORI Number?

Tuesday, March 21, 2023

Essential for businesses involved in the import and export of goods, EORI stands for “Economic Operators Registration and Identification”. An EORI number represents a common type of identification number in the UK and across the EU for economic operators and custom authorities.

Acclaim frequently receives enquiries regarding the purpose and process of getting an EORI number, so our team of logistics experts has put together a comprehensive list of EORI frequently asked questions to help you find the answers to your questions.

Who needs an EORI number?

Your business may need to apply for an Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number) if you import or export goods between:

  • Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Isle of Man and any other country (including the EU)
  • Great Britain and Northern Ireland
  • Great Britain and the Channel Islands
  • Northern Ireland and countries outside of the EU

You may not need an EORI number if you’re moving goods that are for personal use only – but please call our team if you’d like some reassurance.

Where do I get an EORI number?

The application process for an EORI number can be done entirely online on the UK government website. Before starting your application for an Economic Operators Registration and Identification number (EORI number), we recommend that you have the following information available:

  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) – click here to find your UTRif you do not know it
  • Your business’ start date and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code – use this link to help find this information
  • Government Gateway user ID and password – click here to sign up if you don’t already have an account
  • VAT number and effective date of registration – available on VAT registration certificates
  • National Insurance number – applicable to individuals and sole traders

To avoid any delays, we recommend applying a few weeks before transporting your goods as it normally takes around three days for your EORI number to be issued.

What happens if you don’t have an EORI?

If you don’t have an EORI, you are unable to import or export goods from the EU legally. Failing to acquire an EORI number for your imports and exports can result in costly delays and fines.

How can I check my EORI number?
