Driver Wellness During COVID-19

Thursday, August 6, 2020

As key workers, transport and logistics operators, administrators and drivers are on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that supermarket shelves stay stocked and local hospitals and pharmacies have the PPE and medicine they need to protect both themselves and their patients.

Following the government’s recent adjustment of drivers’ hours legislation, it is crucial that HGV drivers make a conscious effort to maintain their wellness in order to efficiently and safely deliver goods whilst working longer hours. At Acclaim Logistics, we prioritise the wellness of our drivers, and strive to provide the most up-to-date advice and guidance for drivers working extended hours during the coronavirus pandemic.

Rest

Although the daily rest requirement for drivers has temporarily reduced from 11 hours to 9 hours, it is still vital that you use this ‘rest’ time to sleep. Working longer hours can cause increased tiredness and slows down the brain’s coordination and reaction times, which are key skills for drivers hauling freight across the UK. You should also use your mandatory break of 45 minutes to leave your cab, eat, stretch your legs and get some fresh air. This will help you to feel more alert and ready to take on the rest of the day.

Health

Looking after your health throughout this period is vital to the wellbeing of drivers and transport staff. Being a key worker can feel like an immense amount of pressure, especially if you are the only person in your household still leaving the house to work. Acclaim is confident that through our social distancing policies and no-contact deliveries our valued drivers and transport staff have access to the right procedures and guidelines to ensure that you stay safe out on the road and whilst delivering.

Following the closure of many popular food outlets, it is likely that drivers will be left with limited on-the-go food options. Some takeaway options are still available at roadside food outlets, but this may restrict you to less healthy choices. Planning your meals and ensuring that you fuel your body with healthy food, especially when working longer hours, is crucial.

Mental Health

If you feel worried or anxious about going to work, please speak to your supervisor. Maintaining mental wellbeing is a valued practice which we encourage our drivers to exercise daily. There are many free online resources to help those experiencing stress or lack of sleep, including free mindfulness apps, resources by Mind and mindfulness tips for key workers from Mental Health UK.
